Every motor carrier must update its USDOT record every 24 months — even if nothing changed. The schedule is derived entirely from your USDOT number:
| Last digit of USDOT number | Must file by end of |
|---|---|
| 1 | January |
| 2 | February |
| 3 | March |
| 4 | April |
| 5 | May |
| 6 | June |
| 7 | July |
| 8 | August |
| 9 | September |
| 0 | October |
And the year: if the next-to-last digit of your USDOT number is odd, you file in odd-numbered years; if even, in even-numbered years.
Miss it and it gets expensive
Failure to complete the biennial update results in deactivation of your USDOT number and may result in civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day, not to exceed $10,000.
The update itself is free to file with FMCSA. The cost of missing it is not. (Source: fmcsa.dot.gov)
FAQ
Is the biennial update the same as my operating authority?
No — this is the periodic update of your USDOT record. Operating authority and insurance have separate rules.
My USDOT has a leading zero — does that change anything?
No. The rule uses the last two digits, so leading zeros don't affect your month or year.
I already filed — why does it still show a date?
This tool shows your scheduled cycle from the USDOT number. Confirm your actual standing on the FMCSA SAFER snapshot.
